FAQ
Questions worth asking before you book
The honest answers to what students actually ask — no vague marketing-speak, no fine print we’re hoping you skip.
General
Is every tutor and advisor really a current medical student?
Yes — every tutor and advisor at Nucleus Prep is actively enrolled at a U.S. MD program right now. Not a contractor, not a recent grad, not someone who took the MCAT once years ago. We name the school and year on the page for whoever you're paired with, so you can verify it yourself.
Where do sessions happen?
Online, over video call. Your tutor or advisor is a med student first, so working remotely lets us match you with the right tier and specialty nationwide instead of whoever happens to live near you.
Is there a set lesson plan, or is it personalized to me?
Personalized. We start from a diagnostic (or your most recent practice test) and your target score or timeline, then build a plan around your actual weak spots. Your tutor brings structure to every session, but the plan adjusts as you improve.
How often should I meet with my tutor or advisor?
Most students land on one to three sessions a week. Less than that and momentum stalls between sessions; more than that usually outpaces how fast anyone can actually absorb new material. Your tutor will recommend a cadence once they see your timeline.
How do I get started?
Book a free 30-minute strategy session right on our site: pick MCAT or admissions, choose a time that works, and tell us where you're starting from. You'll get a confirmation with a video link right away, and you'll meet with a current MD student. No obligation.
MCAT Tutoring
How many hours of tutoring will I need?
It depends on your starting score, your target score, and how much time you have before test day — there's no single number that fits everyone. Your free strategy session includes a personal estimate based on a real diagnostic, not a generic package.
Which tutor level is right for me?
Basic Tutor is the right call if you want structure, accountability, and a solid plan across every section. Specialized Tutor makes sense when one section is holding your overall score back and needs focused strategy. Master Tutor is built for students aiming at the top of the scale who want every section sharpened at once.
Do I need to buy the AAMC practice materials separately?
No. Every MCAT package includes your own one-year access to the AAMC Official MCAT Prep bundle: the full-length practice exams, Section Banks, and Question Packs. It's in your own account, so it's yours to use between sessions, and your tutor builds your sessions around it. If you already have it through the AAMC Fee Assistance Program, let us know when you book.
Do you cover CARS?
Yes — every tutor at every tier treats CARS as a teachable skill, not an afterthought. If CARS is part of what's holding your score back, expect dedicated passage strategy and timing work in your sessions, not just more practice passages.
How do sessions fit around school or work?
Sessions happen online by video, so scheduling isn't limited to whoever's nearby — you and your tutor find a cadence that fits around your classes or work shifts.
What if my tutor isn't the right fit?
We guarantee fit, not a score: if your first session isn't the right match, we'll pair you with another tutor or refund that hour. No awkward conversation required — just tell us.
Admissions Consulting
When should I start working with an advisor?
Ideally a few months before primary applications open, so there's time to build a strong personal statement and activities list before the cycle gets busy. That said, we work with applicants at any stage — personal statement, secondaries, or interview prep — so starting later doesn't mean starting from scratch.
Which advisor level is right for me?
Basic Advisor is right if you want expert eyes on your application and a clear plan to follow. Senior Advisor is built for hands-on guidance through every stage, from the personal statement through interviews. Admissions Insider is right if you want to see your application the way a committee actually reads it.
Will you write my personal statement or essays for me?
No. Admissions committees are reading for your voice and your story, so your application has to be written by you. Your advisor's job is to ask the right questions, push back where the story isn't landing, and edit — not to write it for you.
Does working with a former admissions committee member give me an advantage at a specific school?
No — no one can influence an admissions decision, and we never share confidential committee information from any school. What an Admissions Insider offers is perspective: a clearer sense of how committees actually read and evaluate an application, so yours is built to hold up under that kind of scrutiny.
Can you help with interviews, including MMIs?
Yes. Sessions include mock interviews in both traditional and MMI formats, with direct feedback on your answers and your delivery afterward.
What if my advisor isn't the right fit?
We guarantee fit, not an acceptance: if your first session isn't the right match, we'll pair you with another advisor or refund that hour.
Pricing & Guarantee
How does pricing work, and what's the difference between tiers?
Every tier is tied to a real, verified qualification — see the tier breakdown on the MCAT and Admissions pages for exactly what each one requires. Your first 20 hours are billed at the standard rate; every hour after that drops 20%. Pricing is on the page; there's no quote call.
Do you guarantee a score improvement, an acceptance, or offer a money-back guarantee?
No — and we're upfront about that rather than burying it in fine print. No one can honestly guarantee a score or an acceptance; too much depends on the work you put in outside of sessions. What we guarantee is fit: if your first session isn't the right match, we'll rematch you or refund that hour.
Still have questions?
A real tutor or advisor will personally follow up.
